SOLID FOUNDATIONS: THE DE-ESCALATION STANCE By Adam
De-escalation is the art of calming a potentially violent situation through effective body language and dialogue. In order to properly de-escalate, a discussion of the De-Escalation Stance is in order. Various estimations place body language at over 60% of communication. It is therefore very important that your non-verbal cues are congruent with what you say. Regardless of whether your intention is to avoid a fight or to pre-emptively attack an aggressor, you will need to present yourself as non-violent and unprepared for a violent confrontation.
The de-escalation stance is a is body-language neutral posture. It is employed by maintaining the centreline square to the opponent with the hands placed palms out toward him. It conveys a non-aggressive attitude; a form of psychological posturing designed to provide a false message to an aggressor. By your body language, your attacker subconsciously infers that you are unwilling, unprepared or incapable of rising to his level of aggression.
The de-escalation stance, however, provides physical options - it:
- Creates an obstacle, forcing the opponent to strike round line;
- Creates a focal point for your attacker, which can be used to distract him;
- Creates an opportunity to attack from a closer hand position;
- Conveys a non-aggressive message to witnesses to the confrontation;
- Maximizes the potential of your arsenal by creating target options for both hands
The centreline and de-escalation stance are critical fundamentals. Paired with footwork, they form the basis of effective non-violent confrontation management. Next time I will discuss Peripheral Vision and Awareness, key elements in making the most of your centreline-based attack and defense. Until then, train hard.
UCS SUBMISSION FIGHTING PROGRAM 2010
For those of you who participated in this program -congratulations! This program was amazing. As you can see from the pictures, we sweat just a little bit.

Everyone learned a lot about groundfighting especially how painful it is and how dangerous it can be if you !re not skilled in this area. The focus was on street-effective techniques. How to eliminate an opponent quickly if we happen to get caught in this range. Even if you are skilled, there are many variables that will tell you to avoid going to this range if at all possible. RAZING!!!!!!!
Thank you for your support and Im looking forward to the next one . . . Sifu
