A MESSAGE FROM THE BOSS
I'm sure you are all as impressed and proud as I am with the achievements of our athletes at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. It shows us all that when we have goals and we're not afraid to go for it - anything is possible. Beliefs can be very powerful. For instance, if you believe that the other team is stacked and no way you!re gonna win - guess what - you!re probably right.
We have several acronyms in UCS (hell UCS is an acronym!) The one that I am speaking of here is ACT A= Acceptance - accept the situation you're in - don't fall into the trap of feeling like a victim - change your mindset to reflect that of a victor - act and think like a winner! C = Challenge - when you challenge yourself you are in a state of mind of being focused and you have your sights set on the goal at hand - in streetfighting the goal is to survive to go home to your family unharmed. Finally, T= Think. Think of the optimum strategy for the situation, what you are saying, how you are saying it, assess the opponent. Become situationally aware.
All my life, when someone has told me - you can't do it - you're too old, too short, not enough time, not enough money, not enough whatever........ I have always had a FUCK YOU I'm gonna show you attitude - no one is ever going to tell me what I can and cannot do - I'm not one for asking for approval - I have learned that it is better not to share your goals out loud with anyone - it kills the magic, and people will always have something to say. Its better to take action and let them be in awe of your achievements.
The moral of this story is - GET FOCUSED!! Don't let “you” get in the way of your goals. Here's another acronym - GAR. Goals Action Results. Simple to understand. Goal - know what you want (end result to achieve). Action - get to work!! Results. Do the results = what you want. Yes or No? If no - change the actions. Don't be a baby and cry about it or lay blame - get your lazy ass back to work. STOP MAKING EXCUSES If you have no time - take a time management course or stop wasting it on things that don't matter. Such as “Survivor” or Facebook. Remember - a training day missed is a training day gone forever. Keep going until you get what you want and if you need help we're here to help you always.
Good Luck - Sifu

SOLID FOUNDATIONS: FOOTWORK By Adam
Combat relies on a stable foundation of footwork, balance and mobility. The most essential tenet of effective self-defense is to be aware of, and avoid, threats. When avoidance is impossible, mobility is necessary to remove you from harm and gain the advantage over your attacker. Mobility is actualized through effective, fast, balanced footwork.
UCS stresses footwork that is realistic and balanced, enabling you to move quickly, with depth, and into positions that disadvantage your opponent. The following are the basic elements of footwork: Establishing and maintaining natural foot spacing at rest and in motion, maintaining a 50 / 50 weight distribution between the feet, always moving the foot closest to the intended direction first, staying on the balls of the feet, never bringing the feet parallel, into a T-step, or crossing the legs.
Mobility includes the ability to move in the following ways: Forward, backward, right and left circling around an opponent, off the line of attack and to the outside of multiple attackers. Angularly forward and backward - Depth lunging and quick, short leaps forward and backward
As you can see, footwork in itself is a science. Effective footwork includes reliance on many physical and psychological attributes: leg strength, speed and explosive power, lag time, reaction speed and timing, anticipation, relaxation.
Practice footwork often and with intensity. It will pay dividends in sparring, scenario training, multiple opponent attacks, weapons drills and all facets of training. I encourage you to develop a leg training routine that stresses explosive movement in different directions, over obstacles, around obstacles, which employs jumping and lunging and taxes your sense of balance. If your opponent can' t reach you, he can't hit you.
BIO: SIFU DINO URBANI By David Rabinovitch
Sifu Dino Urbani was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, and originally got involved in self defence more than twenty years ago when he was working with his father and the two of them drove by a Patenaude Kung Fu training center. Sifu had always been an admirer of Bruce Lee, in addition to being a huge boxing and wrestling fan, and he was intrigued to see what the self defence world had to offer.
Through his older brother's advertising agency, Sifu was introduced to Master Patenaude, who was a client of the agency. Sifu took to training like a bee to honey, and began training rigorously 6-7 times a week, including 3 lessons a week with the Patenaudes. He earned his Black sash after 6 years, entered the instructor program in 1992, and by 1994 had opened his own self defense school. By 2001, Sifu had earned his Master Instructor 5th Degree certification, and it was that same year when he branched out on his own and TACT/ UCS* was born (*Tactical Advantage Combat Training / Urban Combat Systems).
Sifu's philosophy on self defense is simple. It should be practical and help you in all real life situations. People should be proficient in all 5 ranges of combat (weapons, kicks, strikes, standing close-quarters, ground closequarters), including, and especially the mental aspect which covers everything from awareness and avoidance to the moral and ethical implementation of one's skills. Sifu's teaching also places great emphasis on regimented physical training, both as a means of attaining mental toughness, and from the practical perspective of being able to prevail in a sustained combat situation.
Sifu's mentors in the field of reality-based self defense have always been Tony Blauer and Sammy Franco, two pioneers to whom all of us interested in self defense owe a great debt. The teachings of experts like Mr. Blauer, Mr. Franco and Mr. Urbani enable us to continue growing and developing while keeping up with the most practical and evolving techniques and information on the planet!
Sifu's advice to new students and anyone interested in learning how to defend themselves in real life situations is clear and direct: Keep an open mind; Set goals; Be patient; Don't be afraid to ask questions; Be respectful to everyone at all times; and Stay focused on your beliefs and objectives… you'll be surprised at how easily they can be obtained! |
